Sad passing of Langholm Town stalwart David Calvert
Saturday 30 August 2025The Scottish Brass Band Association is saddened to learn of the passing of one of the country’s longest serving players with a single band.
Langholm Town Band has announced that cornet player David Calvert MBE has died after a short illness. He passed away peacefully at Cumberland Infirmary on Saturday 23 August, just days after celebrating his 85th birthday.
David devoted 73 years to the band and was a driving force in inspiring and mentoring countless young players. His influence on the band’s continuing success cannot be overstated.
His first public engagement with the band was on the day of Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation. He has also played for the first man on the moon, Neil Armstrong, when the astronaut was made Freeman of the Burgh of Langholm.
David was the major driving force behind the creation of a junior band to encourage youngsters to learn to play brass instruments.
The veteran bandsman has been a dedicated and committed supporter of Langholm Town Band for the majority of his life, having joined the ranks at the age of 12. He was awarded the MBE by His Majesty the King in the 2024 New Years Honours.
