Emotional moment as James receives his life membership medal

Friday 27 June 2025

Congratulations to James Cameron of Buckhaven & Methil Miners Band on his recognition by the Scottish Brass Band Association of his lengthy service to the brass banding community.

James was presented with his SBBA life membership medal at a concert in Leven Parish Church by Brian McCabe – long time friend and fellow bandsman – for both of whom it was an emotional occasion.

James' original choice of musical instrument was the pipes after he had attended the Edinburgh Tattoo at the age of seven. But it was after school that he started to learn to play the tenor horn, later joining the Buckhaven junior band on cornet.

In the early 1970s, after a spell on third cornet with the senior band, he moved on to the fourth man down chair on the front row.

Following university in 1988, he got a job in Kent and played with the Sevenoaks Concert Band and occasionally the Bromley Brass Band.

A couple of years later he returned to Tillicoultry, playing with Buckhaven in a contest under the baton of Bruce Fraser in the first week he got back!

It was in 2001 that he moved from cornet to soprano, his current instrument.
