Girvan Brass is a new venture for playing without pressure

Monday 10 March 2025

A new banding initiative has been launched in South Ayrshire. Girvan Brass is a new group for players who wish to be part of an ensemble of musicians which meets once a week for enjoyment without the pressure of contesting.

It is the brainchild of Chris Johnston, operator of the Sounds of Brass radio station and retired musical director and euphonium player, in collaboration with euphonium/Eb player George Bain.

Said Chris: “You may be retired, not played for a while or just fancy coming along. This group is for over 18s only and we are looking for players in all sections.

“We are only just starting off and already have around a dozen players who have expressed an interested in joining in.”

The group’s first get-together will be on Wednesday 19 March, 7-9pm. If you fancy a blow with like-minded brass musicians get along to the Girvan Valley Church in Girvan KA26 9HE.

It is hoped this will be the first of what will lead to weekly rehearsals.

If you are interested in joining this new venture, please contact Chris Johnston at brassbandradio@gmail.com
