University launches brass outreach project

Wednesday 10 June 2020

A flagship outreach project is being launched in July by the Laidlaw Music Centre at the University of St Andrews. The initiative – called StAMP, an acronym for St Andrews Music Participation – will be launched with an online brass camp for participants of all ages and abilities to play together with The Wallace Collection, the university’s ensemble in residence, as well as featuring a range of experts and acclaimed soloists.

The camp will run on 11, 18 and 25 July, and will also include sessions from renowned brass experts and stimulating discussions on how brass instruments work and how they are played, as well as presentations of new research into the archaeology of brass instruments and their place in society and culture.

In addition to ensemble playing, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions of tutors and interact with each other, and everyone will have the chance to record a contribution to the final virtual concert.

A special part of the brass camp is the offer for any child from Fife, Clackmannanshire, Perth & Kinross and Tayside to have the opportunity to start learning the trumpet at home.
