Fairey and Whitburn join forces

Thursday 7 November 2019

Young brass and percussion players from across Scotland will have the exciting opportunity to perform with two of the UK’s leading brass bands later this month.

Nine-time national champions The Fairey Band, conducted by Garry Cutt, and Scottish Open champions Whitburn Band, conducted by Bryan Allen,  will perform a joint concert at St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral in Edinburgh’s Palmerston Place on Saturday November 30 from 3 pm.

Before the concert, Garry and principal players of The Fairey Band will host a workshop at Whitburn Band Hall from 10 am.

At the workshop - supported by the Scottish Brass Band Association and Creative Scotland - the participants will prepare a number of pieces throughout the morning, including work within sectionals and full band rehearsals with Garry.

They will then perform some of the works alongside Fairey and Whitburn in massed band items at the end of the Edinburgh concert.

Garry said: "The Fairey Band and I are really looking forward to this collaboration, with two of the finest bands in the country on show. It's such a long time since Faireys have been north of the border.

"A fantastic venue, and a great opportunity for the youngsters of Scotland to share in what will undoubtedly be a very special and unique event."

Whitburn Band Chairman Charlie Farren said: “Everyone at Whitburn is looking forward to welcoming The Fairey Band to Scotland for what is sure to be a fantastic concert, and it will be great to work with Garry once more after our successful partnership at the recent National Championships.

“This is a great opportunity for young players from across Scotland to learn from some of the best talent in UK banding, and to perform on stage with two of the best bands in the country.”

Anyone wishing to attend the workshop should contact Euan Meikle or Fiona McLean - euan_meikle@hotmail.com or fiona.wyband@gmail.com

Tickets for the concert are available on the door priced at £12 and £8 concession.
