Another successful BRASS SHOWCASE

Brass Showcase 2018

The second running of this innovative format saw four bands each present a 30-minute concert programme. Coalburn Silver, Dunaskin Doon, Newmilns and Galston, and Johnstone Bands presented four very different and entertaining programmes, to an audience also tasked with choosing their favourite band of the day.

The bands featured soloists, duets and various formats, making good use of the Johnstone Town Hall multi-media facilities, enhancing each of the programmes with visuals. John Hamilton was compere for the day and did an excellent job.

Judges were seated as part of the audience, and were asked to score after each performance a mark out of ten in their category.

Anne Crookston awarded a top score to Newmilns and Galston for Quality of performance earning a Prize Certificate and a voucher donated by Band Supplies; Scott Kerr’s top scoring band for Entertainment/Presentation was Coalburn Silver. Their “afternoon at the Oscars” themed programme, narrated by two junior members of the band and with some acrobatics from their MD, secured a Prize Certificate and voucher donated by Band Supplies; and Charlie Farren awarded the top scoring band for Contribution of Individuals and Soloists to Johnstone, also with a Prize Certificate and Band Supplies Voucher. Scores were combined to give an overall score out of 30, with Johnstone Band the overall top scoring band with 25 points.

Charlie also judged the solo awards, including the Best Junior Contribution for an under-16 player, which went to Alan Hunter from Coalburn Silver Band. Best Soloist was awarded to Johnstone Band Solo Cornet, Alex Ramsay, and a one-year subscription donated by Brass Band World magazine was the prize each.

The audience Best Band of the Day award, with a Band Supplies voucher, was decided by an audience vote. Coalburn Silver Band were the audience favourite with 55 votes from 132 made.

Brass Showcase 2018 received a great reaction on the day, and the bands are keen to hear more audience and participant feedback to help plan future events. You can do this through any of the band contacts or online at  www.coalburnsilverband.co.uk/brassshowcasefeedback
