Passing of Newtongrange stalwart

Saturday 13 January 2018

Newtongrange Silver Band was saddened this week with the news of the passing of band stalwart Bob Fernie.

A statement on the band's Facebook page reads: "The Band was saddened to hear of the loss of Bob Fernie on Friday 5 January. Bob passed away peacefully with his family surrounding him. Our thoughts and love go out to Alan, Jane and the rest of the family at this sad time."

Bob's son Alan Fernie commented: "Although he wasn't a player as such, he was a real stalwart of Nitten band - a committed supporter, occasional bass drummer on parade, and he was well known as the bandhall caretaker. He was always responsible for getting the coal fire blazing, in all weathers! Indeed, such was the esteem he was held in by the band members (along with his pal, Big Eck Philip), that he was voted Bandsman of the Year in 1992! And no New Year's Day parade would be complete without first footing Bob's home!"

Alan continued: "He got to know many of the band's visiting conductors, especially if they arrived at the bandhall early after long journeys from down south. Our family are honoured that the band will play at his funeral, next Wednesday. We're very proud of him."

Bob’s Funeral will be on Wednesday 17 January at 1.15pm at Newbattle Cemetery.
