CELEBRATIONS were in order for the Bathgate Band after it triumphed at the 2016 Borders Entertainment Contest.

Musical Director Anne Crookston guided the West Lothian band to victory at the competition at the Borders College in Galashiels on Saturday, November 5 after impressing adjudicators Michael Fowles and Mareika Gray.

Bathgate's programme found favour with both judges, receiving a unanimous first placing ahead of Jedforest Instrumental, led by Phil Rosier, in second and Shotts St Patrick's, wth Chris Mansfield at the helm, in third.

The winning programme saw Bathgate open with Jonathan Bates’ arrangement of Samuel R Hazo’s Olympiada before solo trombone Garry Kennedy performed Adrian Drover’s arrangement of My Funny Valentine. Paul Lovatt-Cooper’s You’ve Been Warned preceeded the band’s finale, David Stowell’s arrangement of the traditional French Canadian number The Tobique.

Nineteen bands performed at the contest organised by the Scottish Borders Brass Band Association, including a non-competing set from Galashiels Town Band.
