NYBBS impress in Norway

Talented musicians from Scotland and Norway celebrate after their joint concert.

MEMBERS of the National Youth Brass Band of Scotland (NYBBS) have celebrated after returning from a momentous summer course in Norway.

Around 40 youngsters took part in the trip, which began with two days of intensive rehearsals at their base at Åsane Folkehøgskole, near Bergen. The band then hit the road, defying inclement weather to perform in a series of outdoor engagements under Musical Director Russell Gray and Musical Director Emeritus, Richard Evans.

Carrie Boax, president of the Scottish Brass Band Association (SBBA), said: "This unforgettable trip to Norway has shown yet again that the National Youth Brass Band of Scotland is the jewel in the crown of our movement's young brass playing talent.

"The musicians were tremendous ambassadors, representing their bands and their country with pride while fostering friendships which will last a lifetime."

Engagements included performing on the mountain of Fløyen, a joint concert with the Norwegian national youth band, conducted by Reid Gilje, and at the culture house in the town of Voss.

Members were given an insight into Norway's musical history, visiting the home of famed composer Edvard Grieg while the week also included NYBBS' solo contest, which was won by Dalmellington Band's cornet player, Kyle Fitzsimmons. Principal cornet player Rebecca Wilson won the award for best student while percussionist Ruaridh Neil was named best bandsman for his contribution to the trip.

Rebecca Wilson, principal cornet of NYBBS, received the award for best student from Musical Director Emeritus, Richard Evans.

Russell Gray, Musical Director of NYBBS, commented: "Getting out on the road with NYBBS has been a wonderful experience and an honour to be a part of.

"Working with these talented performers was a delight. They embraced every musical challenge laid before them, epitomising the true spirit of the NYBBS, and I can't wait until we meet to make it all happen again."

The next performance will see the senior, reserve and children's NYBBS perform in a summer concert in St John's Kirk, Perth on Friday, July 29, at 6.30pm.

Tickets cost £10 for adults. School children go free but booking is recommended.

Anyone looking to book tickets should contact Ann Murray, SBBA vice president, by emailing annmurray37@hotmail.co.uk. Those reserving children's tickets should include details of the school the child attends in the email.
