Callander And Co-op Joint Concert

The Co-operative Funeralcare Band recently participated in a joint concert with the recently-formed Callander Brass in St. Columba’s Parish Church in Stirling. The bands were under the respective direction of their resident conductors, Gavin Lindsay and Ian Milligan. and gave a good account of themselves.

In front of a very appreciative audience Callendar Brass kicked off the evening’s proceedings with the “March” from Holst’s “Second Suite in F”and proceeded to delight the listeners with a varied and interesting programme which included an excerpt from Rodrigo’s “Concierto de Aranjeuz”which was beautifully played by the band’s flugel horn player Tanya Currie. The band concluded their contribution to the programme with the march “Anthem Of The Free” by Dean Goffin, an item which brought the first half of the programme to a most satisfying conclusion.

The second half of the programme was given by The Co-operative Funeralcare Band and included among others such old favourites as Suppe’s overture “Light Cavalry”

Two of the evening’s highlights were the solo items provided by the bands. Principal euphonium player Alison Bonnar band performed John Golland’s beautiful solo “Peace” while principal trombonist, Paul Kiernan gave a fine rendition of Cook’s trombone solo “Bolivar”. Both items were greatly enjoyed by the audience who showed their appreciation with prolonged applause.

The finale to the programme was a massed band performance of Eric Ball’s famous Salvation Army march “ Star Lake” which again met with a great show of audience appreciation and was thoroughly enjoyed by the players in both bands.
