A huge turnout of 27 bands took part in this years Fife Brass Band Festival contest held at Carnegie Hall, Dunfermline recently. After a long, but very enjoyable day, adjudicator Derek Southcott sent Newtongrange, Arbroath Instrumental, Coalburn Silver and Brass Sounds Inverclyde home with their respective section titles.
Newtongrange took the 1st section title with a three point margin from a very impressive Lochgelly whose conductor managed to cram five pieces into a fifteen minute programme. Arbroath Instrumental continued their fine run of form by adding the 2nd section title to the Scottish Championship section title they won in March, just ahead of Tullis Russell in second place. The 3rd section threw up a repeat of the Scottish Championships result with Coalburn Silver and Dunfermline Town taking 1st and 2nd place respectively. Brass Sounds Inverclyde continued their improvement under Gareth Bowman with victory in the 4th Section just ahead of Dysart Silver, who completed a run fof four second places for local Fife bands.
The only downside to a great contest was the poor turnout from Championship section bands with only Clackmannan turning up to represent the top section. Hopefully the organising committee can look at ways of encouraging more of our top bands to take part in what is a great contest.
