Johnstone Silver Band, conducted by Raymond Tennant, lifted the Scottish Borders Trophy for the second time at the Borders Entertainment Contest held in Jedburgh recently. Shotts St. Patrick’s Band came second, with City of Discovery Band in third and St. Ronan’s Silver Band in fourth position as the highest placed Borders Band. The music adjudicators were John Roberts and Tony Swainson. The entertainment judge, John Lamont, Roxburghshire MSP, gave the entertainment prize to Jedforest Instrumental Band. Best soloist was the horn player with Croy Band; Best Instrumentalist was Ian Aitchison, of St. Ronan’s Silver Band. The new prize for best solo cornet, presented in memory of the late, great Dave Young, was awarded to Johnstone Band, while the prize for the best basses went to Annan Town (APD) Band. The award for best percussion section went to the winners, Johnstone Silver Band. In the youth section, Langholm Junior Band and Peebles Junior Band each received silver awards, while Abbey Brass (Jedforest) and St. Ronan’s Future Band both received gold awards. This section was adjudicated by James Chamberlain.
