Composition competition finalists announced

Friday 31 March 2017

Details have been announced of the three compositions which have been selected to go through to the grand final of the Scottish Brass Band Association’s ‘Young Scottish Composer’s Competition 2017’.

The successful entries chosen by the panel of judges are as follows:

The Island of the White Stag by Iain Munday, Red Robin by Tom Gordon Aitken and Those Who Were Seen Dancing by Fergus Hall.

This week’s semi-final saw six pieces of music analysed and adjudicated on by a judging panel comprising Alan Fernie, Paul Drury and Josiah Walters. After a great deal of deliberation, the top three entries were selected and will now be rehearsed and performed at next week’s Easter Course of the National Youth Brass Band of Scotland (NYBBS) at Strathallan School in Perthshire.

Discussing the high standard of works presented to the panel, Alan Fernie commented: “The standard of composition was extremely high. All of the entries demonstrated that we have some real talent emerging in this country.”

The NYBBS concert on 6 April will see all three pieces performed with another adjudication taking place to determine the final placing. The winning composition, receiving an award of £1,500, will be showcased at NYBBS Summer Course concert on 29 July.
