Busy time ahead for Coalburn brass band family

Tuesday 14 February 2017

The Coalburn Brass Band organisation will make a flying start to 2017 as they look forward to what promises to be the most memorable year in it’s long history.

On Thursday 2nd March, all 4 ensembles will take part in a concert at Woodpark Primary School, Lesmahagow. The concert will feature music from our Children’s Band, Coalburn Bronze Band conducted by David Fehilly. Members of the Coalburn Percussion Academy who will feature a number of younger musicians will join them, making their first performance under their tutor, Gordon Miller. Also appearing will be the Coalburn Intermediate Band who will preview their programme for the Scottish Championship 4B performance with their new conductor Jayne Brownlie. Finally the Silver Band will play their Scottish Championship test piece, ‘The land of The Long White Cloud’ conducted by Gareth Bowman. Over 70 musicians now make music within the Coalburn Brass Band organisation and this is a fabulous opportunity to hear them play in one concert. Tickets are £5 and payable on the night, doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.

The Silver Band will then head to Perth to compete in the Scottish Brass Band Championships on Saturday 11th March, where they return to the competition in the 1st section, the second tier of Scottish banding. The Intermediate Band will also be taking part in the Scottish Championship weekend when they play in the section 4B contest on the Sunday afternoon. The band will play a short programme of concert music on the fabulous Perth Concert Hall stage.

The Silver Band is also privileged to have received and accepted an invite to appear in the Challenge Section at the European Brass Band Championships in Ostend, Belgium in late April. This is the premier brass band contest on the continent and the participation of Coalburn is the pinnacle of the band’s contesting history. Band President Alan Court commented ‘we are honoured and thrilled to be representing Scotland at the forthcoming European Brass Band Championships, it was a late invite but the band members felt is was a once in a lifetime opportunity and accepted. We are already well into the planning and need to raise significant funds to allow us to attend.’

The first of the fundraisers will be a quiz night to be held at St. Johns Parish Hall, Blackwood on Friday 24th March 2017. Great prizes and a raffle will be on offer and teams of up to 6 people are warmly invited to attend. Entry costs are £3 per person. Quiz starts at 7.30pm.
