Entries open for Radio 2 Young Brass Award

Bass trombone player Joe Walters is a previous recipient of the Radio 2 Young Brass Award.

 

THE search is on for the next recipient of BBC Radio 2’s Young Brass Award – and brass players from Scotland are being encouraged to get involved.

The competition is open to brass players aged 16 and 21 resident in the UK, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands.

Based on the initial entries, eight players will be selected to go through to the semi-final stage which will be recorded at the BBC Studios in Media City with four players being selected for the live final, all with Foden’s Band.

Previous winners include Matilda Lloyd, who made her solo Proms debut in 2016 and toured as principal trumpet with the European Union Youth Orchestra.

After attending The Karajan Academy in Berlin and performing with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Ross Knight is now principal tuba with Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in Geneva.

Grant Jameson has just been appointed solo euphonium with The Flowers Band and the 2016 winner Daniel Thomas plays with the world famous Black Dyke Band.
