Irvine and Dreghorn in Ayrshire Hospice donation

Thursday 28 January 2016

Robert Flynn, fundraising officer at Ayrshire Hospice, receives a cheque from members of Irvine and Dreghorn Band.

THE season of goodwill continued into 2016 for Irvine and Dreghorn Band (IDB) after it raised hundreds of pounds for Ayrshire Hospice.

A cheque for £370 was handed over at the second section band's rehearsal on Sunday, January 24 after the money was raised from sales of a musical advent calendar and Christmas CD.

Kelda McMichael, treasurer of IDB, said: "We really wanted to do something for the Ayrshire Hospice, and since we are always out and about and busy during the Christmas period, we thought we'd combine the two.

"We had a great time recording the CD and advent calendar. Thanks to all who supported our Christmas campaign."

Robert Flynn, fundraising officer at Ayrshire Hospice, attended the band's practice to receive the donation. He commented: "The care we provide is at no cost to our patients or the families and although NHS Ayrshire and Arran does contribute towards running costs, it costs around £20,000 per day to operate the hospice service and annually we require £4.3 million in volunteer donations.

"This is a huge task, but the enthusiasm, support and generosity of the people of Ayrshire helps to ensure that hospice care and services continue to be available free of charge, to all. Thanks to the band and its supporters."

The band's attention now turns to preparations for the Scottish Championships. Set work, The Mermaid of Zennor, will feature in a concert in Irvine Old Parish Church, Kirkgate, Irvine, on Sunday, March 6 at 7pm. Entry is free to the event, which will also feature IDB Junior Band.
